We have found that this journey with AI is not just a testament to technological advancement but a renaissance of creativity, blending the precision of algorithms with the intuition of art.

AI as a Collaborator

As an artist, defining one's style is an evolutionary journey, and in our case, AI has emerged as a pivotal collaborator in this exploration. The integration of AI into our creative process wasn't just about adopting a new tool; it was about venturing into a new frontier of artistic possibilities.

The core challenge for us has been to harness AI's capabilities in a way that complements and enhances our artistic vision. AI alone, while powerful, cannot achieve the nuanced and complex results that the human-artistic mind can conceive. However, when its outputs are melded with human creativity, it can lead to extraordinary and unexpected artistic expressions.

Our approach has been to view AI not as a replacement but as a partner in creation. It's about taking the raw, often surprising results that AI generates and weaving them into more profound, meaningful works. The real magic happens in this fusion, where AI's interpretations of our prompts often lead to delightful surprises, sparking new ideas and directions that we might not have considered otherwise

This collaborative relationship with AI is a dance of give and take. we feed our artistic vision into the AI, which then processes and responds in its unique language of algorithms and patterns. The output is often a reinterpretation of our ideas, seen through the lens of AI's capabilities and limitations. This ‘back and forth’ becomes a source of inspiration, a way to push boundaries and explore uncharted territories of creativity.

In essence, AI has become an integral part of our artistic identity, not just as a tool but as a co-creator. It challenges us to rethink the conventional boundaries of art and to embrace a new paradigm where human and artificial intelligences coalesce to create something neither could achieve alone. This partnership sets a new stage for our artistic expression, one where the possibilities are as vast as the imagination itself.

A(I) Tapestry of Tools and Techniques

As we ventured deeper into the realm of AI-assisted art, our workflow evolved into a complex tapestry, interwoven with a variety of AI tools and technologies. Each tool brought its unique strengths and capabilities, allowing me to push the boundaries of what was possible in our creative endeavours.

Image Diffusion + Manipulation

We experimented with Midjourney and Pikalabs, for generating novel visual concepts and immersive environments. We embarked on the creation of short film concepts, harnessing AI to visualise intricate and compelling storylines. A particularly fascinating project was the historical “reanimation” of vintage photographs, where these tools breathed new life into old imagery, creating a bridge between past and present. Runway and Leonardo offered advanced capabilities in image manipulation and creative reinterpretation, enriching our approach to visual storytelling.

The GPTs Among Us.

ChatGPT became a versatile tool in our arsenal, aiding in the creation of articles, artist statements, and helping us with the development of our web and portfolio presence. For immersive artworks and installations, ChatGPT's capabilities in generating narrative and descriptive content were invaluable.

Extending 3D Workflows

Our journey with AI extended into the realm of 3D modelling and animation. First we set out to use ChatGPT to generate Python scripts for Maya. Without any programming knowledge we developed an optimisation workflow for retopology and remeshing High Polygon assets to “Real-time Ready” completely automating this process for us going forward. In addition we have started using Johannes Andersson's ChatGPT for Maya plugin for some amazing modelling efficiency.

A(i) Modular Approach

The development of a modular approach to AI integration in creative projects has opened new frontiers in production techniques, as exemplified in our recent project for a production of "Peter Pan." We successfully built a Notch block for the character Tinkerbell, utilising the NVIDIA Broadcast SDK's AI skeletal tracker. This innovative approach allowed us to process all the filmed footage, seamlessly adding dynamic elements like wings and pixie dust that followed Tinkerbell's movements. The AI's ability to track the performer's skeleton in real-time was crucial, as it enabled the added animations to remain consistent and realistic, regardless of the changing environments within each scene. This modular integration of AI not only enhanced the visual spectacle of the production but also demonstrated how AI can be effectively tailored and integrated into specific creative needs. The result was a captivating, technologically advanced portrayal of Tinkerbell, showcasing the possibilities when traditional theatre meets cutting-edge AI technology.

Capturing Reality

The use of AI in photogrammetry has significantly enhanced the accuracy and detail of 3D models, heralding a new era in digital reconstruction and preservation. Meshroom, available through AliceVision, has become an integral tool in our in-house toolkit. By generating 3D models from images, Meshroom offers us a powerful way to visually comprehend and interact with physical spaces in a digital format.

This capability has been invaluable in our projection mapping projects, allowing us to accurately tailor our digital projections to the physical contours and features of a space. The precision with which Meshroom constructs these models ensures that our digital content aligns seamlessly with the real-world environment, enhancing the overall impact and immersive quality of our creative works.

Furthermore, in film production, we have used photogrammetry to get a detailed understanding of locations. By converting set images into 3D models, we gain a comprehensive view of the spatial relationships and dimensions within the set. This insight is crucial for integrating digital content into live-action footage, ensuring a cohesive blend of the virtual and real elements in our film projects.

NeRF, SMERF and Splatting

As advancements in cutting-edge techniques like 3d Gaussian SplattingNeRF (Neural Radiance Fields),and SMERF (Semantic Merging of Radiance) takeus further by constructing highly detailed 3D scenes from a collection of 2D images, offering unparalleled depth and realism in digital reconstructions. Additionally, the introduction of tools like Cuebric use sophisticated algorithms streamline the process of creating and refining 3D models, making it more efficient and accessible for virtual production.

The integration of AI into our workflow has been a journey of discovery and innovation. These tools are a vital resource for bridging the gap between real-world environments and digital creativity, thereby expanding our capabilities.

Each tool and technique has contributed to a more enriched creative process, allowing us to explore new frontiers in visual effects, animation, and storytelling. This fusion of technology and artistry has not only enhanced our capabilities but also redefined our understanding of the creative potential inherent in the digital age.

Revolutionising Artistic Conceptualization

AI has fundamentally altered not just the tools we use, but more importantly, the very nature of our creative process. This transformation has been particularly evident in three key areas: the pace of creativity, the structure of the creative process, and the blending of AI results into physical spaces.

Pace of Creativity

AI has dramatically increased the speed at which we can develop and iterate on ideas. The traditional, more time-consuming methods of conceptualization have given way to a faster, more dynamic approach. With AI, we can rapidly generate a broad spectrum of ideas and visual concepts, significantly shortening the time from conception to realisation. This acceleration has allowed me to be more productive, experiment more freely, and respond swiftly to the evolving demands of projects.

Structure of the Creative Process

The advent of AI has introduced a new rhythm to our creative process: the prompt/response/revise cycle. we start by providing AI with prompts – these could be textual descriptions, rough sketches, or any form of input that conveys our initial concept. The AI then generates responses, which can range from rough interpretations to highly detailed renderings. This is followed by a revision phase, where we refine the AI's output, tweak the prompts, or combine elements from different AI-generated pieces. This iterative loop has become a cornerstone of our workflow, enabling a more exploratory and nuanced approach to art creation.

AI in physical spaces

Perhaps the most challenging and exciting aspect has been integrating the results of AI into physical spaces. This involves translating digital concepts into tangible experiences, whether it's for installations, live performances, or mixed-reality environments. The task is to harmoniously blend AI-generated elements with real-world contexts, pushing the boundaries of fidelity and quality. It's about creating more complex, combined results that challenge traditional methods in terms of innovation and aesthetic appeal. This integration tests not just the technical capabilities of AI, but also our own ingenuity in crafting experiences that seamlessly merge the digital with the physical.

AI has not just been a tool in our artistic arsenal; it has redefined the very process of how we conceive and create art. It has enabled a faster, more responsive mode of creativity, introduced a new structure to the creative workflow, and opened up new possibilities in integrating digital art into physical realms. As we continue to explore and push the limits of what's possible with AI, we find ourself constantly inspired and challenged by the new landscapes it opens up in the world of art and design.

AI Prompting Artistry

In our journey of integrating AI into our creative process, the interplay between human intuition and machine capabilities has unfolded as a fascinating dynamic. This relationship has been marked by moments of surprise, learning, and adaptation, particularly in navigating AI's limitations and harnessing its strengths. Crafting effective prompts for AI has become an art in itself.

We've found that providing detailed context and clarity in our prompts significantly influences the outcomes. It’s not just about telling the AI what to create, but also how to create it. This includes specifying the format, style, tone, colour palette, and the emotions or creative influences we want to emulate. It’s about painting a vivid picture with words, ensuring the AI has a comprehensive understanding of our vision.

One of the most striking aspects of working with AI has been encountering its limitations. There have been instances where the AI seems oblivious to certain concepts or elements that are obvious to the human mind. Overcoming these challenges often involves a nuanced understanding of how AI interprets inputs. We've learned that the effectiveness of AI largely hinges on how well it's guided.

An intriguing aspect of working with AI is the need to articulate not just what is present in a scene, but also what is absent. This involves describing perspectives, backgrounds, and the finer nuances that might be taken for granted in human imagination but are crucial for AI to understand and replicate the desired artistic vision.

This journey has redefined our role from being solely a creator to becoming a collaborator. Our creative intuition guides the AI, shaping its output, while the AI's responses often inspire new directions and perspectives in our work. This symbiosis has led to a richer, more diverse creative process, where the limitations of AI are balanced by human creativity, and the capabilities of AI are harnessed by human guidance.

In essence, the dynamic between our creativity and AI's capabilities has evolved into a partnership. It's a dance of give-and-take, where human intuition meets machine efficiency. This partnership has not only expanded the boundaries of what we can create but has also deepened our understanding of the creative process in the age of artificial intelligence.

Challenges & Discoveries

Incorporating AI into our artistic practice has been a journey filled with both challenges and eye-opening revelations. Adapting to this new tool required not only technical acumen but also a shift in our creative approach.

Here are some of the major challenges we encountered:

Effective Prompting

Learning how to effectively prompt AI has been a pivotal part of our journey. The structure and specificity of prompts greatly influence the AI's output. We've found that detailed, descriptive prompts yield more accurate results. It's crucial to provide context, specify styles, tones, perspectives, and even emotional undertones. For instance, rather than a generic prompt, a detailed description like "a melancholic landscape at dusk, with impressionistic influences and a pastel colour palette" guides the AI more effectively. This approach requires a blend of creativity and strategic thinking – envisioning not just the end product but also the pathway to get there through the AI’s 'mind'.

Model Training Depth

Each AI model comes with its own set of limitations. Whether it's the range of styles it can generate, the types of inputs it can interpret, or the complexity of scenes it can handle, these constraints often required me to rethink and rework our ideas to fit within the capabilities of the AI tools at our disposal. It's a delicate balance of pushing the boundaries of these models while acknowledging their inherent limitations. Control Net and LORA with Stable Diffusion have methods to  train models and create checkpoints in the process.

Avoiding Surrealism - Fidelity over time.

One of the most prominent issues has been the loss of fidelity, especially noticeable in AI video prompting. We observed a surreal degradation in quality over time or when transferring compressed generated results between different AI programs for further development. This challenge underscores a critical limitation in current AI technology – there's a fleeting window where the quality remains high, and it diminishes rapidly with each iteration or modification. It’s like chasing a mirage of perfection that fades away just as it seems within reach.

Closed Environments

Many AI platforms are built as closed environments, relying on proprietary algorithms and interfaces. This siloed nature poses a significant challenge in integrating AI workflows into broader artistic contexts. Our limited programming skills at times hampered our ability to seamlessly blend AI tools into our existing workflow. However, this has also highlighted a potential area for significant future development – the creation of more open, interoperable AI systems that artists can more easily adapt and integrate into diverse creative environments.

Moderating Community Standards

Additionally, the public generator threads on some platforms can become problematic, veering into odd or inappropriate content. This issue underscores the need for dedicated channels or private one-to-one chat functions, particularly to protect more vulnerable groups, including children. Kid-friendly apps and monitored environments would greatly enhance accessibility and safety. Children should not use areas like Midjourney’s public forums, which might expose them to unsuitable content. It’s a shame because they are keenly interested in exploring and creating with these AI tools. Ensuring safe, age-appropriate spaces for access would not only protect them but also nurture their creative curiosity in a constructive way.

Integrating API

Our expectations for 2024 will see greater Integration of AI tools with real-time compositors like After EffectsDisguiseSmode7thSense and Pixera and 3D animation software like Maya and Blender to further  enhance AI-generated art, breaking free from closed systems. This will allow for more dynamic creations, blending AI with traditional workflows. However, technical and compatibility challenges can impede this integration. To maximise AI's potential in art, developers should focus on easier integration, fostering a more inclusive and versatile creative environment where AI can seamlessly interact with a range of digital tools. This approach will expand artistic possibilities and encourage innovative collaborations.

Exploration Aware Pricing

In AI art, token-based pricing models struggle due to the iterative, often unsatisfying nature of AI-driven creation, like using '/imagine' commands in Mid Journey or Dall-E. This process can be resource-heavy and unpredictable, contrasting with the predictability of traditional art tools' licensing models. There's a crucial need for a balance between enabling artistic experimentation and maintaining production quality. Current models, with their cost-related limitations on experimentation, call for new, more flexible monetization strategies. These should reflect AI art's unique process-centric nature, offering artists room for exploration and practicality, thus making AI tools more accessible and better suited for enhancing creative work.

The adaptation to AI in art has been as much about learning to navigate its limitations as it has been about exploring its possibilities. Each challenge presented an opportunity to deepen our understanding of AI and its role in the creative process. It's a continuous learning curve, where the challenges are as integral to the journey as the revelations. As AI technology evolves, we anticipate new developments that will address these challenges, making AI an even more integral and flexible tool in the artistic process.

Ethical AI Aesthetics

Navigating the waters of originality and authorship in AI-assisted art has been both intriguing and challenging. Our approach begins with the acknowledgment that while AI can generate art, the creative spark and direction stem from the human artist.  We view AI tools as brushes in our artistic palette, instruments that extend our creative capacity but do not replace our vision. When using AI, we ensure that our inputs - be they conceptual frameworks, aesthetic choices, or thematic inspirations - are distinctly mine, thus maintaining a clear thread of personal authorship even in collaborative works with AI.

Algorithmic Bias

In our engagement with AI technologies, ethical considerations, especially algorithmic bias, are paramount. Recognizing that AI systems reflect their training data, we actively pursue diverse and inclusive datasets to ensure a broad spectrum of perspectives. This effort goes beyond data selection; we rigorously scrutinize AI outputs for inadvertent biases and take corrective actions when necessary. This includes retraining the model with more varied data or manual adjustments, demonstrating our commitment to ethical AI use and ensuring our art doesn't perpetuate stereotypes or exclude underrepresented groups.

Our goal is to use AI responsibly and conscientiously, ensuring our art promotes positive representation, inclusivity, and diversity. We strive to set a standard in the art community for ethical AI use, not just as a tool for creation but as a means to foster a more equitable world. This approach embodies a moral obligation to use technology respectfully, uplifting human diversity in our artistic endeavors.

Creative Authorship

The concept of Creative Authorship in the context of AI and art delves into a profound ethical conundrum that is reshaping the landscape of artistic creation. When AI is trained on a myriad of images, many of which are the works of countless unnamed artists, it raises intricate questions about the nature of compensation and recognition. This dilemma is not just a matter of legal rights; it fundamentally challenges our understanding of what it means to be an artist in the AI era. Traditional notions of creativity and authorship are being reevaluated in light of AI's capacity to assimilate, remix, and repurpose existing art. This reevaluation requires a thoughtful approach to how we perceive the role of AI in art creation.

On one hand, AI has the potential to democratize art, allowing more individuals to engage in creative expression. On the other hand, it poses a threat to the very essence of individual creativity and the unique, personal touch that artists bring to their work. The blurred lines between the artist's original creation and the AI's interpretation of that creation demand a new framework for understanding authorship in the digital age. This issue also brings to the forefront the need for fair and transparent systems for attributing and compensating original creators, ensuring that their contributions are not lost in the AI-driven art revolution. Balancing these factors is crucial in maintaining an ethical, respectful, and sustainable artistic environment where both human and AI contributions are valued. The conversation around Creative Authorship in the era of AI is not just about adapting to new technologies, but also about preserving the integrity and value of human creativity in an increasingly automated world.

Workflow Redundancies

As AI increasingly takes on significant roles in the creative process, there are growing concerns about its impact on the value of human artistry and the potential replacement of creative jobs. These concerns stem from the AI's ability to quickly generate diverse artistic outputs, which could overshadow the slower, more nuanced process of human creation. This rapid production capability of AI raises questions about the unique value and irreplaceable nature of human creativity in the arts. There is a palpable fear that AI, with its efficiency and evolving complexity, might not only supplement but eventually supplant human artists in various creative domains. This scenario presents a challenge to the traditional understanding of art as a deeply personal and human endeavor, and it necessitates a reevaluation of the role and importance of human touch in the creative industry.

Furthermore, the swift pace of development in AI tools implies that both product cycles and artistic expressions may face shorter market lifespans. This accelerated obsolescence can lead to a rapid turnover in artistic trends, styles, and tools, leaving little time for in-depth exploration or mastery of any given medium or technique. Consequently, this fast-paced environment may cause certain people, products, and ideas to struggle in keeping up, creating a divide between those who can quickly adapt and those who cannot. In light of this, resilience and adaptability become crucial qualities. It is important for artists and creatives to continuously evolve, learn, and embrace new technologies, while also preserving the essence of human creativity. Balancing the integration of AI with the irreplaceable aspects of human artistry is key to navigating this dynamic landscape, ensuring that the artistic field remains diverse, inclusive, and deeply human at its core.

Artistic Aesthetics

In our creative practice, AI has revolutionized both the aesthetic and conceptual aspects, particularly impacting the way we approach visual styles and languages. While it has opened doors to styles we might not have explored independently, one significant challenge we've encountered is the prevalent aesthetic similarities across image models. This uniformity often presents a hurdle in differentiating our work from the broader AI-generated art landscape. Our method, therefore, involves a deeper engagement with the AI’s capabilities, starting with a unique concept or image and using AI to enhance or reinterpret our vision. However, we're continually mindful of the AI’s tendency to steer towards certain familiar patterns and textures.

This issue of model aesthetic similarities necessitates a more conscious effort in our collaboration with AI. It's about striking a balance between leveraging AI's vast possibilities and maintaining our distinct artistic voice. The AI's input, while valuable, is carefully scrutinized and often blended with manual interventions to ensure our work stands out. The challenge is not just in utilizing AI for its technological prowess but in creatively directing it to reflect our unique artistic identity. This dynamic interplay pushes us to innovate continually, exploring uncharted territories in creativity while consciously navigating the pitfalls of homogeneity. As we adapt and evolve with AI in our artistic journey, we're learning to harness its power in a way that enhances our creativity without diluting the individuality that defines our art.

A Proactive Response

Our response to these concerns is not just reactive but proactive; we choose to embrace and lead the conversation. Acknowledging the contributions of original artists used in AI training is crucial, as is exploring fair compensation models. By openly addressing these ethical considerations, we aim to shape a future where AI is seen not as a threat to creativity, but as a collaborative tool that enhances and extends our artistic capabilities. This approach is not only about adapting to inevitable changes; it's about actively guiding them to ensure that the integration of AI in art is respectful, equitable, and driven by a deep appreciation of human creativity.

Our journey with AI in art is guided by a commitment to maintaining personal originality, adhering to ethical standards, and embracing the new aesthetic possibilities presented by this technology. It's a continuous learning process, one that constantly challenges and enriches our artistic practice.

The Future of Art and AI

Looking ahead, we envision a future where AI not only coexists with traditional art forms but also catalyses new genres and creative expressions. We predict a surge in hybrid artworks, where AI-generated components are seamlessly integrated with handcrafted elements, blurring the lines between digital and physical art. Moreover, AI's evolving capabilities in understanding and replicating emotional nuances will likely open up avenues for more personalised and emotionally resonant artworks. As AI continues to advance, we anticipate it will become an essential tool, akin to the paintbrush or camera, unlocking new creative dimensions and redefining the boundaries of artistic expression.

Educational Insight

AI's influence in art education and the wider art industry cannot be overstated. In educational settings, we foresee AI being used to provide personalised learning experiences, where students can explore a vast array of styles and techniques under AI-guided mentorship. This could democratise art education, making it more accessible to diverse populations. In the art industry, AI will likely revolutionise design processes, enabling artists and designers to rapidly prototype and realise complex projects.
